Junior Tennis

Tennis SA played host to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Cruyff Foundation International Junior Wheelchair Tennis Camp / Tournament played from Wednesday 29th March through to Sunday 2nd April at Next Generation, Memorial Drive.

Fierce competition embarked on Next Generation as Australia’s best players fought to confirm their spot in the Aussie Junior Team in May at the World Team Cup in Brazil. (Equivalent to Davis Cup for Wheelchair Tennis Players). Greg Crump (National Coach) had his work cut out choosing the team.

Players who attended were Michael Esler (No. 1 jnr player in the World), Dylan Alcott (Vic), James Bowles (Vic), Lindsay King (NSW), David McCormick (Qld), Kim Robins (WA) and our very own Henry De Cure (S.Aust). Henry DeCure is a name to look out for in the future.

Michael Esler continued to show his dominance by defeating Dylan Alcott in the singles final 6-3, 6-1 and then Michael and Dylan teamed up for the doubles and won the round robin format. Wheelchair Tennis in Australia is looking extremely strong with a very good contingent of junior players.

Joining the camp from Jakarta was Coach Satria Teruna Negara who was a very useful addition to the camp making many contributions and taking plenty of new information back to his tennis program in Indonesia.

What is a camp without a Come n Try session, on the Friday we had 2 juniors and a lady quad player come and strut their stuff, The Come n Try was for 1 hour, 4 hours later they were still there viewing the other juniors going through their paces and a parting promise that they would be back for more!

Thank you to the Cruyff Foundation for their ongoing sponsorship support of the ITF Junior Camps being run throughout the world.
