Athletics
Track
Track athletes compete in a specifically designed racing wheelchair with two large wheels at the back and one smaller wheel at the front. Athletes accelerate the chair by pushing the small round pushrims which are attached to each of the large wheels. There are specific rules relating to the chair, but most event rules are the same as able bodied racing. Athletes are classified according to their level of ability.
Competitions available include the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m and 10000m track events. Road races over a distances of 10km to the marathon form part of the National Road Race Grand Prix Series.
Field
Wheelchair field athletes sit on a specifically designed throwing frame to execute their throws. The frame is attached to a holding device which keeps them stable. This chair is pegged to the ground to make sure that the chair does not move. Ambulant throwers compete under similar conditions to able bodied athletes, but all athletes are classified according to their level of ability.
Competition available include discus, shot put, javelin, long jump, high jump and triple jump. Pentathlon events comprising of five separate track and field combination are also available for the enduring athlete.
