Wild Week of Wheelchair Rugby
Wheelchair Sports SA was proud to play host to both the 2006 Telstra National Wheelchair Rugby League (NWRL) and the annual Chris Handy Cup competition.
The Sport of Wheelchair Rugby (formally named Murderball) was showcased in Adelaide from the 14th - 22nd July. This full on week of Rugby kicked off with Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia going head to head to establish the NWRL rankings for the finals in Melbourne in August. Despite their success in previous years the SA team came out bottom of the ladder. SA player Ryan Scott puts this result down to the fact that other states have had an influx of new talent. Despite SA’s position on the ladder, they played well with games tight right down to the final quarter. On Friday 14th July we also held a Wheelchair Rugby Development evening for people who may be interested in taking up the sport. We had a few keen people turn up ... so hopefully SA might have some new talent for the 2007 season!
Tuesday 18th saw the arrival of the World number one ranked New Zealand Team in Adelaide to contest the Chris Handy Cup. This is an annual competition between AU and NZ and is always fierce with plenty of trans-Tasman rivalry between the two teams! The teams competed at the Canada Cup (Vancouver) less than 3 weeks prior to the Chris Handy Cup, with NZ being defeated by USA in the finals and AUS being defeated by Canada to come fourth. With this result the Aussies had hoped that the NZ team had lost some of their edge, however NZ won the Chris Handy Cup 3 games to 2. Despite their loss Australian Coach Mr. Evan Bennett was pleased with his teams performance saying they played well and had improved on their performance in Canada. It wasn’t all serious business though with several of the boys from the Black Falcons Rugby Union Team playing in a Demonstration Match against the Aussie boys. Their Coach Carl Jones admitted his players skills were more suited to Union!
With all players heading home happy, I would like to thank all staff and volunteers for their part in creating a successful event.
